Squeaky Brakes

I have a 2011 Pathfinder which I bought new about a year ago. Six months after I brought it home, the brakes started to squeal. I took it back to the dealer and they said it was rust on the brakes so they cleaned them off for me. Soon after, they started to squeal again. Usually only is noticeable when they are cold. Brakes work fine however. A little frustrating, new, nice vehicle but it sound like I am driver a clunker.

Any one else having this issue? Any ideas or thoughts?

If your rotors are still in good shape put new organic pads on. I did that on my mountain bike last weekend and it got rid of my squeak.

Thanks for your quick response cgray. I had pulled the wheels and took a quick look, everything looks fine to me with the exception of surface rust on the edge of the rotors. I would not have expected that I would need to replace the pads with 30000km (18000mi).

Already posted, but look into some organic pads or some ceramic pads. Most vehicles come with a semi-metalic pad that are cheep and easy to produce but are loud etc.

Since Asbestos is no longer used in brake linings, some "dust squeek" is considered "normal" especially when cold. I wouldn't recommend "organic" pads on your vehicle or your next complaint will be about all of the black brake dust that is forming on your front wheels. The original Nissan pads are ceramic type and you should stick with ceramic pads if you replace them. That said, I have a 2006 LE that had genuine Nissan pads installed that occassionally squeek and a 2008 SE that I put new Akebono Ceramic pads on front and rear (purchased from Rockauto.com) and they don't squeek ever! The original R51 pads are made by Hitachi for Nissan. Akebono has been an original equipment supplier of brakes to Nissan for years. When replacing pads, it is important to lubricate the slides and shims. There is a TSB (NTB11-021) that refers to front brake squeek in all Pathfinders built before Feb. 9, 2011. It instructs to apply Molykote 7430 copper grease to the pad retainers. Its Nissan part number is 43003-14C10PP.

I did not know about the black dust from the organic pads. I will look into the pads you mentioned. What was the cost?

I actually spent 7 months in Afghanistan last year and worked side by side with some Canadian AF individuals. I'm a munitions troop and our Ammunition Supply point was located next door to the Canadian supply point.

Now I understand your Avatar. Dad was a radar technician station in Ceylon in WWII working on Liberators and my uncle flew bombing missions in to Germany.

Nissan wanted $110 for the front pads alone. The Akebono's also came with new guides and ships and mol lube. Fit like original equipment!

I had my front rotors turned today and put on some new ceramic brake pads...really brakes alot smoother now.
