Trans Fluid

Postby disallow » Fri Aug 03, 2012 2:23 pm

Its time for the yearly drain and fill on the transmission. Still can't bring myself to switch away from genuine Nissan fluids. So down to the stealership we went. (Me, my 5yr old daughter and 2yr old son)

Nissan is apparenlty trying really hard to get me to switch to an aftermarket replacement. $16.24 a liter! WTF?!?!? Everytime I go to buy this stuff, its about $3-4 more expensive than last time. Yeesh.

Also, we still cannot get Matic-S up here, I even asked and the guy said he'd never heard of it.

Priced out some Castrol Multi-vehicle ATF yesterday, it was $35 for 5L. I thought it was expensive. Nope!

If you go with the Castrol, get the Multi-import ATF. Personally, I've been using Valvoline Maxlife ATF in a 2006LE (with AUTO mode) and a 2008SE (no AUTO mode) for over a year and it's been fine! I usually get it on a one gallon jug, which is the perfect amount for the R51's drain and fill.

Hmmmm, was just reading the label of a jug of valvoline dex/merc I have from a car I used to own. It says its good for infiniti (all models) but doesn't mention Nissan anywhere.

Won't be using that!

On the jug Valvoline Maxlife jug I recently used, it specifically mentioned suitable for use in Nissans requiring Matic-S or Matic-J.

Check out this forum thread. At the bottom of the first post, is a downloadable Adobe PDF file of a letter from Valvoline showing its compatabilty of a number of vehicles, including Nissan types D, J, S and K. Infiniti uses the same trans fluids as Nissan.

Also, here's a link to a product information bulletin stating it's compatabilty with Nissan types D, J, S and K, as well.

Bought 2 x 5 liter jugs of Valvoline Maxlife Dex/Merc high mileage (that's all they had on the shelf). $24 a piece.

It does say its compatible with Matic D, J, and K.

Did a drain and fill with Matic J today, it came out pretty dark. Not surprised due to towing my huge camper with a bypassed rad. Its dark, but didn't really look as bad as I thought it would.

Planning to flush through the 10L I have plus the other liter of Matic J I still have.

Last time I did it, I purchased a gallon of Maxlife ATF from Advance Auto Parts with a discount code on their online site and picked it up at the store for $20.
