Postby WheatBread » Sat Mar 09, 2013 12:11 pm

What size allen wrench do I need to change the rear diff fluid and what is the capacity or how much do I need to buy to change it out?

Be sure you can open the fill plug before you drain the old fluid out :)

The drain plug also has an aluminum crush washer that Nissan recommends replacing, but I've never had any issues with reusing them. Of course, if I had new ones at the time I drained them, I would have replaced them.

if it's the same one that's used for oil changes, i got it for free last time i visited courtesy nissan (courtesyparts.com). so sad they're not just right down the road from me.....but so happy that now the mountains are :)

On mine it's a flat aluminum washer, same used for the transfer case plugs, and unlike the copper washer used for the oil pan and trans pan plugs.

Copper washer P/N (oil pan, AT pan): 11026-JA00A (formerly 11026-01M02)
Aluminum washer P/N (transfer case, diffs): 11026-4N200

How often should you replace it? I'm on about 111,000 or so.

Depends on the type of driving you do. If you do a lot of off-roading in muddy conditions, I would recommend every 30,000 miles. If you drive only on paved roads and highways, you might never need to do it, but I replace mine every 60,000 miles, regardless.

Hmm, the Canadian Service and Maintenance Guide says to replace the differential oil every 48000km (30000mi).

Is the fill screw the one i see located on the passenger side just a little above the drain. Does not look like i could get 1.5 quarts in there with that plug being that low? Doing this today, lemme know...

Is this the fluid that comes in the rear end from Nissan or an upgraded fluid?

That's the Nissan service specification for the differential oil, so it should be the same as what's installed from the factory.
