The trans is really good. I have heard of a couple that have had problems that were not related to the contamination issues, but that's not bad. There have been some PNP switches that have failed, which are are part of the valve body. Some software issues on the 2008 that Nissan addressed. But, on the whole, very good. It's a shame so many have been killed by a poorly made radiator.

Run Mobil1 in all my vehicles. 0W20 in the Acura per manufacturer recommendation and 5W30 in the Pathfinder and Jeep. Buy it in bulk from Wal-Mart or where it is on sale typically stock up in 5 gallon jugs with coupon.

Next question... what is your oil change interval with the synthetic. I'm somewhere between 5,000-6,000 in the Jeep. The Acura has a maintenance-minder that often goes 9,000 or more before oil life is below the 10% threshold. Haven't had an oil change in the Pathfinder since switching to synthetic (just bought it in May).

I've been doing 9,000 using NAPA synthetic (rebranded valvoline) and the couple oil samples I've done look good. Two samples at 7,500 mile interval when I was still under warranty (max mileage per book) and the last one was at 9,000. Lab said to sample at 10k next time.

Our Acura also goes 8k-9k miles and it's came loaded with 5w-20 conventional oil. I sampled first change (break-in oil) and it was fine at 8,500 miles. Amazing the quality of oil these days. I now run synthetic in it anyway and run the MID all the way to 0%.

"Shell Rotella® T6 5W-40 provides unsurpassed protection against shear-stability degradation, compared to the leading competitive API CJ-4 5W-40 products. An extremely shear-stable product helps maintain consistent viscosity and oil pressure in the engine.
YOUR PROTECTION - OUR EXPERIENCE"

I know there has been talk about our Pathfinder's timing chains wearing out fast and needing to be replaced.

Has anyone tried this oil before? Will the 5W-40 hurt our pathfinders? I believe it calls for 5W-30, so I don't think it would hurt our motors.

Thoughts?
I'm currently using Rotella T6 5w-40 after reading all the great feedback on all the other forums. Subaru crowd loves this stuff in particular. VQ40 does fine with it. Engine seems quieter as it is slightly more viscous than conventional 5w30 stuff dealer was putting in. The reason I switched to Rotella was that this oil consistently generates great UOA numbers with testing labs, it is cheap for synthetic and is always available at walmart. It also eliminates all the racket my engine makes with 5w-30 oil the dealer was using.

I used T6 on my 06 Mazdaspeed 6. It was great stuff.

Do any of you guys notice any engine ticking after you switched to the synthetics? I ask because I used to run the Mobil 5w30 fully synthetic in all of my Hondas and they would eventually start to tick and that drove me crazy.

I would like to switch but if my PF starts to tick I am going to get upset..

i've been running synthetic since around 15k miles and now over 105k. No notable ticking...nothing like a Honda. We have a year old Acura MDX that has ticked since new so I don't think it really matters.

I have two R51 4.0's running synthetic and haven't had any tapping issues.

Have run Mobil 1 in my pathy r51 since I got it at 60k kms. Hasn't missed a beat, but that oil sure gets dirty! I try to change around 7500km, or 5000mi ish.

I have a sample sitting on my desk at work waiting to send in, just haven't gotten around to it.

What proof do they need of the oil change being done prior to 7,500? I prefer to perform my own oil changes. Is a dated receipt of a oil and filter purchase sufficient?

Receipt for oil/filter and document the miles/date on the receipt. That would be adequate if there was an engine issue during warranty (which is HIGHLY unlikely).

Great. Thanks for the post.

BTW, whereabouts in Ohio are you? I'm in the Central Ohio region.

Live around Zanesville. For work I bounce between an office downtown C-bus and locations all over the eastern half of the state.
