Rear Suspension Airbags in 08 4X2???

Postby nissan4me » Mon Jun 09, 2008 7:46 pm

I towed with the Path for the first time today. Loaded quad trailer around 3500#. I need to add airbags in the rear! It was a little bouncy. The airlift bags say 4X4. Can this be installed on a 4X2? Any differences between the Firestone Coil-Rite and Airlift?

Thanks for any info you can give........

I installed the Firestone airbags on my 07 2WD. They really work great. I went with Firestone because some other posters indicated problems with the AirLift hose connections leaking and the hose connections here are different. So far, the system holds air pressure indefinitely.

BTW, the same Firestone part fits both 2WD and 4WD.

Here is the quad in the small trailer. No squat but it was still soft. I will get the bags ordered hopefully this weekend.

Is that picture without airbags? If so, do you know how much tongue weight you have? With 3500 lb and normal tongue weight of 350-400, that thing should be down 3-4 inches at the hitch (at least mine was with the same weight).

No bags installed yet. That picture shows my light trailer and quad. Quad is #800 and the trailer is approx #1600.

Even so, at 2400 lb and maybe 240 lb on the tongue, that looks great. I'm thinking they may have increased the rear spring rate for '08.

Before I got my travel trailer, I tried to estimate the drawbar drop I would need to achieve the proper ball height. I stood on the ball and measured the sag. I am about 180 and IIRC, the rear end sagged a little more than an inch at the ball. Your picture shows little if any sag.

Being a tilt trailer might help the sag. Its designed to tilt back drive onthe quad, lower it down.. Even with the quad loaded, I can raise and lower the trailer with 2 fingers. Tongue weight is right at the minimum, but it tows very well.

Good, it sounds like you have it under control. If the tongue weight was light, it would be wagging all over the place. In Europe, they go down to seven or eight percent on the tongue and it seems to work OK. I don't know why we Americans want more, but I would be cautious about going less.
