Road Trip

Postby Captain » Mon Jun 30, 2008 12:38 pm

I just got back from a 1000 mile road trip with the 2008 R51 4x4. Took at ride from s.w. Chicago to Two Rivers Wis. From there a nice drive to Black River Falls Wis. Then Back home to Chicago. I did this trip for Technical scuba diving class. What a nice ride the pf did not give us one problem.

grats on the trip to 'Scony. im a Wisco native myself. i just completed a 960 mile trip in my '08 4x4 also. i was getting 19 mpg on the way there and got an amazing 20 mpg on the way back.

as i was thinking about the difficulty i've been having trying to find an adequate grill guard for my new ride, i blasted a deer going about 70 mph... get this, there is no visible damage.

im going in for my 3750 mile check this week and i will have the guys give it a once over.

so... does anyone know of a grill guard for an '08 4x4 SE i can look at. they are hard to find, and even harder to find ones that offer decent protection.

perhaps i should chop up this post and get the parts inquiry where it belongs... but im at work and just wanted to drop a quick line.

as far as i know, the only front bumper / grill guard (s) that provide any protection are made by ARB or Shrockworks.

ARB recently released their "Sahara Bar" for the 05+ PF. www.arbusa.com

I dont recall if Shrockworks has a PF specific bumper. They are not up to date on their website, and they actually sell some protection products for the 05+ PF. www.shrockworks.com

dont waste your money on the little bumper bars that only mount under the bumper (i.e. to the tow hook mounts)... if you hit anything heavier than a shopping cart, the "bumper guard" will be smashed into your bumper and radiator. yah!

oops... sorry to hijack the thread

Good to hear you didn't get hurt by the deer, sometimes they get flipped up and come through the windshield...think a half crazy 400 lb animal with four sharp hooves and maybe antlers sitting on top of you and trying to get out of the cab... :(

If I was in the market for a grill guard / radiator protector I'd find a welder who works out of his home shop and could bend and fabricate some 2 1/2" schedule 80 heavy wall T-6 aluminum tubing from the frame up to just below the hood latch and in front of the grill by about 8 inches. The weight would be about 1/2 of steel for similar strength and for a weight efficient 30 to 40 lb aluminum guard addition I wouldn't have to worry about redoing the front struts and springs to carry a 150 - 200 lb, as most are designed, steel factory bumper guard.

I was averaging of 20.9mpg on the trip. I went threw 2 tank fulls of gas, not bad for 900 miles.

08V8 or 4.0L ?, pretty good fuel economy either way for these trucks. As an aside I had to do a real quick trip recently and at 160 kms/hr on a curvy paved road this truck rides and handles like a dream...(wet, not nightmare).

i got the V6 as well and am still conflicted about the decision. The V8 would be nice, but is incredibly hard to justify given my lack of regular towing.

The V6 holds its own quite well though.

Pathfinder FTW
