Coolant change

Postby silver02ex » Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:08 pm

Hello everyone, I'm planning on doing my coolant change this weekend on an 06. From what i've read Nissan seems to have a problem with getting air trapped in the cooling system? What's the best way to go about getting the air out. Is there a bleed screw on this engine? All my cars that i've own I just leave the radiator cap off and just let the engine run for a few mintutes. Should i just jack up the front up and let the engine run? I hate to pay $100+ for the dealer to change my coolant.

Are you planning on a drain and refill, or a complete cooling replacement? If the first just drain the radiator and refill, yo will get out about 1 and a half gallons (6 quarts) approx. If doing a complete drain may want to pay Nissan to do it. I just did my first drain and fill at 100K miles and in another 25 to 30K miles I'll do another one.

Nothing! I have not done the complete coolant change. I just did a drain and refill. I estimate stealership is between $125-150 for a complete coolant change.

The service manual advises an elaborate procedure for pulling vacuum with a special tool to make sure you get the right amount in and avoid air. When I asked the parts guy about this tool he laughed at me, made some comment about engineers and their white shirts, and said to just drain it and fill the normal way. Apparently that's the way they do it in the shop and he couldn't even order me the tool.

When I did it, I just opened the plug in the radiator, drained whatever was in the radiator, and refilled the amount I got out back into the radiator fill cap. Haven't had any issues with air that I know of. Since the coolant looked and smelled extremely clean, I didn't worry that I didn't get all of the coolant out.

Agree, it's an elaborate procedure to avoid air pockets in the block and the heater pump. If not done like so will overheat the car and or cause a no heat when you run the heater. I think a few drain and refills every certain mileage will replace the old coolant.

Well, I decided to buy the fluids from Nissan, since i wanted to do my differential, transfer case, coolant, and transmission. Took everything to my mechanic and he charged me $150 for labor to flush the coolant and transmission and do a drain and fill on everything else. Nissan wanted to change me $350 just for a drain and fill (on the radiator) and transmission

Anyone know the location or have a pic of the drain plug on the engine block for the coolant? I'd rather fully drain from both radiator and engine block when I'm gonna change my coolant.
