2012 SV - any issues? Radiator, secondary timing chains..?

Postby snakeyez77 » Wed Sep 10, 2014 8:31 am

Hi all. We had a 2008 Pathfinder S that we loved. Great car, but we did experience the dreaded secondary timing chain failure just after the factory warranty expired. We had that fixed at the dealer. Sadly, our Pathfinder was totaled in an accident last week. 90,000 miles with the secondary timing chain being our only real issue.

I'm looking at a nice used 2012 SV model.

Apparently the radiator failure was addressed and hopefully doesn't affect the 2010-2012 models. Right?

What about that secondary timing chain issue?

What about the fuel gauge messing up issue?

Any other known 2012 problems?

you should be good to go. Nice thing about buying the last model year available is that most of the issues, if any, should be fixed. That and the model was around for 7 years helps alot.

Currently have around 27k on my 2012 SV. No issues.

My friends 2010 S had around 206k from the last time I saw him on Labor Day weekend. No issues either.

I looked into this before I bought my 2012 S model and it seems (fingers crossed) that the radiator issue was addressed sometime in 2010 some say late model year 2010. The timing chain issue was a change made also in 2010 "I think that was the year?" Anyway they improved the chain and made the plastic chain glides thicker. This May or may not solve it but I have a friend with a 2010 V6 with 125,000 miles and his motor is quiet with the stock chain and he is not the best with his oil changes either. Frankly I have no idea about the fuel gauge issue? Anyway my "S" model V6 runs fantastic I love driving it I so go get that 2012 and don't look back!

I bought my 2012 R51 with 20k miles and now I'm at 25k miles so I don't have much of a dog in this fight. I have only had one minor issues where it kept saying the fuel cap was loose but I think this may have been from me topping off the tank. It eventually reset itself after a day of driving and the fuel level pulled down a bit. On our 2200 mile round trip from Texas to AZ, we didn't have one issue and it was quite comfortable and enjoyable. It has a bit more body roll than I like but not anything serious and for minor off-road work with the stock setup, it's like a little mountain goat. There is one little annoyance where when I crank the vehicle cold, it will idle up to about 1500 RPM's and it seems there is a slight rattle in the engine but it only lasts about 1/2 a second or so.
My only real issue with the R51 is the lack of cubby holes to store things.

Mine has done this since new...still does it with 120k miles. Not sure what it is but so far so good!

My 2012 has some start up noise also it's slight and quick. I think the shock of the high start up RPM that the V6 has prob does not help matters. Anyway it does not seem to effect the durability of the V6 there are plenty out there with high millage.
