Engine noise

Postby Grayham127 » Tue Feb 09, 2016 4:55 am

Whilst on tickover I can hear a low grumbling noise like a bearing failing. then when I switch off the engine it continues for two or three seconds after the engine stops.
My garage are completely foxed by this so HELP....

Might be a pulley
Take belt off and spin each pulley or alternator

It could be a bad torque converter, too. It's hard to say without hearing the noise for oneself.

Manual Gearbox so no torque converter. Thanks for the thought.

All components connected directly to engine (everything you can see) stop immediately the engine stops. Water pump bearing was my first thought but this stops with the engine. Noise continues after all the bits you can see are stationery...

Thank you for your thoughts.

2005. I have had a suggestion that it could be the air con pump clutch spinning after the engine stops. This would account for the fact that nothing seems to be moving visibly under the bonnet!

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have now found the culprit!
It seems that the Alternator has a free wheel clutch mechanism inside the drive pulley. This allows the alternator to continue to turn after the pulley stops!
