2001 Pathfinder Auto "whirring" sound in Park and

Postby pdxdan » Sat Feb 20, 2016 3:52 pm

I have a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder gas 4X4 with 277,000 kilometers. Just recently I have noticed a whirring sound in PARK and NEUTRAL. When I move the shifter to drive or reverse the whirring stops. Noise seems to go up with engine RPM. The automatic transmission seems to function normally otherwise in drive and reverse.
Any ideas on what could be causing it?

Alternator itself or its bearing is my guess.

Interesting...Idler pulley and bearing were just recenty replaced after a failure.

But yesterday I took the car to a local repair shop in Bright, Victoria and they told me the noise was coming from the automatic transmission and I would need to take it to a automatic transmission repair shop for evaluation.

Went though 25 pages of Pathfinder issues and found no posts similar to this one. The mystery continues. Meanwhile I bought a "roadside assistanc"e policy.

Bearings going bad

Postby pdxdan » Tue Feb 23, 2016 10:48 pm

I took the car to the transmission shop recommended by my mechanic. Diagnosis was bearings going bad around the output shaft. No way of telling when they will fail completely. :( Will post the cost of the repair when I get the bill.
