4wd Front End Clunk.

Postby MikeYQM » Thu Feb 11, 2016 2:23 pm

I'm getting a single not loud but noticeable clunk out of my front end ONLY in 4wd while accelerating from a stop. It happens as soon as the driveline goes under load it seems. Any ideas?

Thanks. Is there a way I can accurately diagnose the problem?

you can do the 'play' test on the driveshaft, (just grab it and move it back and forth to see if there is excessive play) but you may need to unbolt it to determine if you are getting the required articulation from the u-joints.

Once you've disconnect the driveshaft, you can do a similar test on the yoke of the differential to see if there is excessive play there.

I checked the drive shaft today. There is rotational play, about 1/4" or so if I rotate it back & forth by hand. Then you a click and it engages the diff. What do you think?

i will be following this. Im having the same issues with my 05 when its in 4low. More so when crawling and one of the wheels looses some traction. Post up if you figure this out! hopefully its not the diff itself.

that amount of play sounds excessive. I would remove the driveshaft and see what kind of action there is on those u-joints.
