Postby bigmac » Thu Oct 30, 2008 2:33 pm

Does anyone know any websites that sell plain black steel wheels?

Welcome to the forum Bigmac, here's another thread from an Xterra forum which also covers the topic;

I was able to buy set of Fumagalli 16 x 7J rims from a local Canadian dealership parts department which had

brought in large numbers of rims for winter use on X's, Frontiers and PF's.

Here's a thread from a guy who put on 16 x 7J steel rims from a Dodge Dakota;

Depending on your budget you can likely get Dakota (1998 - 2003) / Durango (1991 - 2004) steel spare rims from a local auto wrecking yard.

There should be enough wrecked Nissan PF's, Xterra's and Frontiers around that one of the California wrecking yards who deals only with Nissan parts
should have a rack full of spare rims.

One consideration with the Fumagalli and Dodge rims however is that they aren't hubcentric which can put some extra stress on the lug bolts, but that can be fixed in a couple of ways.

The wheel hub center hole diameter can be decreased from 71.4 mm to about 64 mm and then rebored to the correct Nissan PF 66.1 mm size at a machine shop or wheel specialist shop. Another option is to have a machine shop make up a hub spacer for between the wheel and hub which would also work as a hub nut cover, a molded wrench size on the outside edge of the hub cap might save some down the road rim removal problems, use lots of CopperCoat or similar lube on the inside of the spacer / hub cover if you're going this way.

Some trucks come with factory bolt-centric rims though, such as Toyota Tundra, Highlander, Tacoma, etc so I don't worry about the difference and I haven't had a problem with wheel vibration, balance or abnormal tire wear but I might get a set of hub nut covers machine shop built anyway for esthetics.

Most tire shops use a hub-centric method of wheel balance but some might have adapters to do bolt-centric balance also. Another solution that a few friends use for dynamic balancing is Dyna beads or similar from;
