You don't need the "special tool" to install the new tensioner shoes on the tensioners; I use a set of Channelock pliers with a set of plastic covers from some Craftsman Robogrip pliers (to prevent marring the plastic) to install them. Some have said they have pressed them on by hand, but they must have pretty strong hands because I couldn't do it! Having the ring gear stopper tool is recommended. It makes it easier when loosening/torqueing the crank pulley bolt and it also allows you to do the job without removing the upper plenum and valve covers. If you haven't read it, already, then I suggest reading the Nissan TSB on the repair.
