Hole in muffler - spitting out water ?

Postby nismopath » Tue Feb 11, 2020 10:19 am

After changing the spark plugs today I had noticed a strong exhaust smell and realized I have two holes in my exhaust. One is on a seam just above the muffler. The other is on the back end of the muffler and water was spitting out of the pinhole. Very strange. What could be the reason for the water spitting out, above and below the muffler.

Car exhaust is primarily water vapor.
It often collects in exhaust systems especially after short trips in winter cold.

8x O2 (g) + CH3CH2CH2CH2CH3 (l) (mix of various isomers so the stoichiometry is just an example) ------> 5 CO2 (g)+ 6 H2O (g)

Ok so basically it’s normal and just old.

I guess I need a new exhaust. Are there any better bolt on kits better than others?

I found the BOSAL and Walker kits on Rockauto. Anyone have any thoughts on those two options?
I had been leaning toward the Gibson catback, but for literally half the cost.. these two might be an option. For $200 more, what am I getting from the Gibson that I won’t get out of the BOSAL or Walker?

It looks like everything from the cat back is all bolt on, am I correct in that? If so I can do that at home and no need for a shop.

I drilled another small hole at the back by the other one. Lets more of the water out easier.

I wouldn't replace the exhaust based on the pictures. A lot times there is a hole placed at the bottom, rear of a muffler or resonator to drain the water out of it to keep it from rotting out. I remember many years ago on the early R50 Pathfinders that Nissan had us drill a hole in the post muffler to do just that as part of a quality assurance campaign. As far as the leak at the joint on the crossover pipe, just have an exhaust company or other capable shop run a weld where the two pipes connect. It'd probably cost you $25-30.
