2006.

I tried doing this sequence when the 4wd drive light was already on, and I got no codes. Should I do it when the 4wd light is off and the system is acting normal, or does it not matter?

Here's the link to the Transfer Case section of the 2006 FSM:

https://www.nicoclub.com/service-manual ... 006/tf.pdf

You have the TX15B (Auto) transfer case.

Symptom chart on TF-211.
Self-diagnostics start on TF-219.

Self-diagnostics should produce a code if the warning light is "on." Refer to FSM for further info.

ok thanks, I will try it tonight.

let me ask this though, if this issue is going on with the 4wd light being on, does that mean the 4wd could actually be engaging? Or is it just acknowledging an issue? I don't want to drive around with 4wd engaged the whole time if so.

Usually it won't engage if it's on.
