Observation on our engines oil recommendation ...

Postby palmerwmd » Sat Apr 25, 2020 10:01 am

Not another oil thread?
Bear with me.

I am currently an expat in a german speaking country.
People take the right oils specs very seriously here.

I am here with my Nissan SUV vehicle with the VQ40 engine.
arguably the coolest running and least oil stressed of the VQ series.

So what does the Nissan dealer here recommend?
5w-30 like in the US???
You'd expect that right?

But,No.
He recommends 5w-40, or 10w-40 (as alternative in summer)

What does the local independent oil chain recommend?
5w-40 or 10w-40

What about the Shell oil company website?
Same 5w-40 and 10-40..see attached link
https://www.shell.de/autofahrer/engine- ... d0VjVnUwUA

So what is the point I am trying to make?
Oil recommendations in the US are fueled by the EPAs testing regimen which is very cold running biased.
I believe our engines tolerate 5w-30 just fine.. but according to the Europeans a 5w-40 or 10w-40 is the proper oil.

So now that I had my 2nd oil change in Europe both with 5w-40 I will stick with it when the car comes back to the US.

My 2 cents.

I know there are a lot of 5W-40 oils that have specifications for both diesel and gas engines. Since diesels are so popular over there, maybe that's why they use it?

Hmm... good thinking but I observed when it comes to oil they are not into a one size fits all approach here...

They really seem to mean this recommendation.
I still believe it may be traced down the EPA testing methodology.
