R200 Rear Locker

Postby docwatson » Fri Jan 23, 2015 5:49 pm

Has anyone installed the RD106/RD201 (31 spline C200) ARB air locker in their R200 differential?

I have exchanged a few emails with ARB and they have no plans of producing a R200 specific locker but they (ARB) are under the impression the RD201/RD106 (31 spline C200) locker may fit. Scott, the guy that has been emailing me is saying it may fit but ARB has not received any feedback from anyone that may have tried.

So with all that said, has anyone tried to install the 31 spline C200 locker in their V6 R51 Pathy? Any feedback would be great.

I may be approaching this slightly wrong. Does anyone know the technical specs for the R200 carrier? Specifically ring gear bolt size. I know the OD and ID of the ring gear are identical on the C200 and R200. And both are 31 spline so I am feeling like it should work. Just want to get a little more info before dropping 1200 on something that doesn't work.

So for those who are interested. Working with Steve over at Rugged Rocks, he discovered the R&P, spline count and shaft diameter of the R51 R200 all match the C200k. This is great news because that means the ARB RD196 may fit.

Also great news for the R51 V8/Armada crowd is the ARB locker for the R230 3.36&Dn that Steve is working with ARB on. If you are interested and haven't signed up yet, contact Steve

I don't even own a R51 yet haha. My wife and I sold my Jeep before I left the States for a year and are buying an R51 when I return.

My interest in 4x4ing and remote travel started me down the rear locker search. I didn't really want the V8 so I started researching the R200 and compatibility. Steve is the one that was able to take my search to the next level. He just needs a R200 diff to crack open and measure. If no one else pulls the trigger before I get back to confirm/deny it; my plan is to budget the locker into the vehicle purchase and try it out.

Based on my research and conversation with Steve, I am 90% sure the RD196 will fit, but I am concerned there is some random spacer or something that will blow it for us (yes, I already include myself in R51 ownership).

You should hit up Steve at Rugged Rocks. I think that link was from last fall, so I am not sure what progress has been made on the R230 locker.

Your Pathy build I found on another forum was my inspiration for an R51. Now you can get that thing locked f/r. Should be even more impressive after that!

That's a compliment, I appreciate that.

I had an M205 locker, had thoughts of changing platforms, sold the locker, and have since decided to keep this build so, yes $$$ project. But now with this news, I'm looking forward to getting both lockers back in my possession.

I got a hold of Steve and he's still pursuing it so I gave him my info. I also posted on ClubArmada to gauge interest.

So to update those interested.

Yesterday I called a Nissan dealership in WA to confirm cross compability of the C200K and R200 carrier (or case - differential as Nissan calls it). Good news some of the parts are manufactured under identical part numbers which only further solidfies the RD196 for use in the R200 in my mind.

C200k vs R200
Ring and Pinion: Shared gears
Axle Shaft Diameter: Identical
Axle Spline Count: Identical
Carrier: Same part number (01/05-09/05 and 07/08-08/09)

If someone is willing to drive to Rancho Cucamonga, CA to work with Rugged Rocks on a test fit that would be awesome.

Otherwise, it won't be until February of 2016 that we have a true answer.

I was hoping to finish before posting, but i just can't wait any longer. For those interested, this is the Powertrax No-Slip for the C200K set up within tolerance in the V6 R51 R200 carrier. My issues are very tight half shaft to axle gear clearance, it's taking some polishing, and halfshafts circlip retention. The C200K axles just slide in and bolt into place. Our IRS half shafts are secured with a pressure fit circlip, and the No-Slip axle gears lack a retention groove. No machine shops want to touch the hardend splines for fear of breakage, but I have found a retiree with a small shop in his garage, and a willingness to try. I am working on another rear locker option, but we are still some time out for that one. Just a tease at the moment. If anyone has to donate or sell a spare R200 or C200K carrier with spider gears but not necessarily a ring gear, it would speed the process!

Nice!

So does the No-Slip need machine work or the half shafts?

Inside the no slip axle gear a groove about 3/16 deep needs cut. After massaging the gear and axle with valve grinding compound the fit between them is fine, but it was too tight initially. The shop is having a hard time finding a cutting wheel to fit inside the axle gear to make the cut. Wish I knew somebody with a full CNC setup, but with those mods, there's no reason it won't work. Here's hoping to break no splines while cutting the groove!

In way of an update let me just say mechanically locked front and rear make for some interesting highway time. Learning the art of smooth, consistent application of throttle.
