R51 rear door rattle.

Postby Timpel » Wed May 13, 2020 6:34 am

Greetings.

Since February this year im proud owner of 2011 v6 pathfinder. Since ive got the car the right rear passenger door has been making rattling sound. It does drive me crazy now. The best description of the rattle would be like bare metal cable rattling against the metal sheet. It does it mostly on rougher/unpaved road. Also little bit fainter on smooth roads. Took it to friends house yesterday. Removed the inner door liner, removed the speaker. Then went to test drive to determine what is the cause of the rattle. Most of the rattle comes from the window motor and strength beam (?) inside the door. If friend pushed the beam the rattle was nearly gone. Also if he pushed the window motor mounting plate the rattle was less noticeable. All the screws inside of the door are secured enough. Nothing is looss inside. There are some kind of rubber pieces between the beam and the outer sheet of the door. Any ideas what might cause the rattle? Ive checked underneath the car
No heatshield is rattleing.

I have this same issue, I assume its to do with the rear window. I have not looked into or attempted to fix though.

What about putting closed cell foam like neoprene between the motor and whatever's rattling? That's one trick that generally works if you can't find something loose.

I've sometimes used adhesive sheets of foam from Hobby Lobby and cut to fit. but also big pieces of neoprene.

I also have had this issue for quite some time now (2012, Silver Ed.). For a while I thought it was a loose license plate but now I'm pretty sure it's the gate latch.
Was anyone able to fix this issue?

Would be the same thing. Open the rear hatch, remove the interior liner (plastic piece), and find whatever's rattling. I also damped and insulated my rear hatch. It's pretty surprising how much noise from way back there makes it all the way forward. I could hear the clinking of the lock on my bike rack before, etc. Also, lots of road and wind noise comes in through the back hatch, where turbulence is at maximum.

It is less of a PITA to remove the hatch plastic than you think...

If it's the gate latch or the rear glass handle being loose letting the glass rattle while driving, just simple nuts and bolts. I dont' think you need to take any plastics off back there, everything should be straight forward to check for tightness.

True, if it's the latch or the rear window wiper assembly, which does come loose on people. But the OP had issues inside the rear door. Hard to tell what's going on for who here
