If you can push a 200 psi strut back in by hand, it IS bad or you have some really strong hands! :)

You can easily push them by hand & I'm far from being a bodybuilder. It only takes an inch or so of movement to tell. Never tried more than that as I'm sure that's where the strength would come into play.

On a side note, my 30lb McMaster glass hatch struts are now just as weak as the OEM when I replaced them. At some point, I'll probably order 40lb struts and see if that will help.

I couldn't push mine in by hand when I got them, so I better start eating my Wheaties!

225# McMaster Experience

Postby Brmadsenad » Fri Jan 16, 2015 8:49 am

Just put the 225# McMaster Struts on my rear hatch. It was as simple as people described. I recruited my wife to hold the door up while I put on the new struts. I thought about taking video and pictures for others. But, really, it is simple enough that you shouldn't need much instruction.

For those wondering, the 225# struts have PLENTY of power. I would understand why some people conclude 225# is too much. It opens (even in the cold) by itself. Closing it requires more force than you would expect for a stock vehicle, but it isn't so hard that you worry about getting it done. Its just more effort than usual.

Our 2008 SE is my wife's daily driver. With that in mind, I do think she would prefer something a little lighter. I also suspect that in a year's time the #225 will weaken a little bit.

one of my big annoyances is the rear hatch (not the glass, but the hatch) slamming closed, even with good OEM struts
do the 200# struts help to prevent this?

Slamming (eieio)

Postby Brmadsenad » Fri Jan 16, 2015 9:05 am

The stronger struts don't seem to help much with slamming. Once you get to the last couple inches, the angle that the struts are at prevent them from doing much. But because you have to pay a little more attention to close it, you are less likely to slam it.

I'd say the benefit as to "slamming" of 200#+ struts over stock is minimal to non-existent.

So do I. Closing the rear hatch on the Xterra sounds and feels like closing one of the doors. Closing the rear hatch on the Pathfinder sounds like it's causing damage. Really poor design.

Ended up picking these up and have been happy with them a few weeks in now. I'll probably look at doing the window ones next.

Not really. Just better in the opening and overall support of the hatch. I've just gotten in the habit of holding the hatch open maybe an inch or two before letting it go to latch closed, minimizing the grand slam as much as I can.

Just bought a set of the McMaster 225 struts for my 2012 model. I also bought four new ball ends for them since I believe the threads on the balls changed back on 10 or 11. Just now thought of it but should I have also ordered four retaining clips for the balls.

New ball ends had clips. Man should have gotten the 200# vs the 225#. If i lose a handle on the door going down gonna get busted in the face :-)
