Rear Hatch Not Opening

Postby heckler40 » Wed Dec 05, 2018 8:14 pm

So, the rear hatch stopped opening yesterday. I hear the hatch unlock and lock ok but the switch doesn't appear to do anything. Glass opens and closes appropriately.

Here's the fun part: There's no emergency release. I spent a couple hours reading through the threads here and confirming the part I have. It's 90502-CY00A. I looked into the hole where the emergency release is supposed to be and there's not one there. And it looks like the mentioned part number.

Looking up the image online confirms that there is no latch to grab. Any ideas?

I'm completely floored that Nissan would do this...

Should have mentioned that I checked the fuse as well. It's good.

Can the rear panel be removed without opening the hatch? It looks like the handle may screw into the door some how.

I was hoping to crawl back there, remove the panel and see if it's just the switch.

I have a similar issue sometimes on my 2005. I think if you don't have the motor, then they would be the same. The fix for mine is to lock and unlock the doors with the remote, and then the actuator handle works again.

Thinking about it, I'm pretty sure yours should have the motor, i think it was standard after 2008... So this may not be helpful. If so, sorry!

It doesn't have the motor. Posted the pn in the original post.

I think the switch has failed which puts me in a bind since I cannot open the door. And, with no emergency latch on the pn listed, the only option I have lef is to remove the panel. When looking at this it looks like I cannot remove the panel without opening the hatch! Hoping someone went through this before and there is a fix...otherwise to the dealer I go.

Sorry, posted a message, but it didn't display correctly. Had two links to PDF files and guess the system didn't like that. I just edited it a bit and it looks like it's displaying correctly now.

Yup I have the SM. See #4? I think that inserts into the panel on the bottom and then screws in. This is where my concern is. If that is the case, I won't be able to remove the panel from the inside without ruining it.

Anyone have insight into the SM #4 item above which is the handle for the gate? If that has to be removed first then I have no option but to ruin the rear panel as I cannot open the hatch.

Took it to the dealer today.

Confirmed the handle does need to be removed to remove the back panel.

The part does have an emergency release but it is not shown on well in the manual and I couldn't feel it when I was feeling around. It certainly is not a lever or way out there and easy to get to.

Will take pictures and hopefully this saves someone some money. Total is ~$600. $350 for that part number and $200 for labor, plus tax.

If you look online, from another dealer, the part is about $240 shipped.

As a side note, spoke to the mechanic for a bit. Said I was lucky I do not have the cinch module. Said they replace a ton of those.

Thanks for the follow up.
This happened to me on my Xterra twice.
Sprained lots of WD40 in there.. then it opened both times..
