Rear Hatch Window Leak

Postby SilverGhost » Fri May 25, 2007 9:44 am

Anybody ever notice the rear hatch window leaking water? I washed mine today, and happened to open the hatch window. I noticed several streaks on the inside where water had run down the glass. It wasn't wet from washing it, but apparently had occured during previous rains. I noticed the same thing shortly after buying the truck in January, but didn't think much about it and just cleaned it off. Seeing it again, today, concerns me. Probably needs a new gasket, but just wondered if anyone else has seen this happen.

Nope, never seen that before. Weird.

Unless the seal is obviously torn, I would guess it's more a hinge adjustment issue.

Mine does exactly the same thing.I think the water must hit at just the right angle for it to come in.

phantom, have you ever mentioned this to your dealer?

I'm getting an oil change soon, and I'm gonna ask about the leak. The gasket is intact and, based on my inspection, there isn't any way to adjust the hinges to tighten the window against the opening.

I've never mentioned it to the dealer.I'm due for an oil change so I may mention it to them when I bring it in.It really has been such a small amount of water that it never really bothered me but I should have it taken care of.

I see it once in a while too, it's usually just one drip or streak. Not really enough to worry about right now, but it'd be a nice thing to get fixed before my warranty is up in 8 months. It only seems to happen once in a while, so it'd be tough to duplicate to a dealer.

I suggest that you mention it to your dealer before your 8 months is up. Just based on the responses confirming my original post, I believe this is an issue Nissan should address. On a personal note, I mentioned it to my dealer, who said they had no knowledge of a problem, but would check into it.

Something isn't right with the window seal, else there wouldn't be at least three of us in this small NissanPath universe who have experienced the problem. Granted, the leak isn't a big deal, but it isn't right either.

Good point, it shouldn't be something that Nissan should be able to just get away with. These little things either drive you crazy when they all add up, or they turn into bigger problems later. But I guess I should be happy that it's not a bigger problem.

Now the question of how to get to the dealer with a normal work schedule is another thing. My Nissan dealer basically runs a skeleton crew on Saturday, so if I want anything done I have to leave it there during the week and it's a real pain. I'm planning on saving up a bunch of my little gripes to get fixed all at once with about 6 months left. Sporadic window rattling, passenger seat vibrating, rear hatch leak...I think that's it. Most of my other squeaks and rattles have seemed to cure themselves, but Murphy's law says that they'll reappear at 37 months or 37,000 miles, whichever comes first.

My truck now has approximately 36,200 miles. I took it to the dealer last week, before the warranty ran out, for the 6th time for the to fix mainly rattles. To their credit the dealer has been very hepful and even said they would refix issues if they came back but we will see. I had the Bose radio/CD player replaced, the right front speaker replaced, rattle behind the dash fixed, right and left front windows reajusted and foam inserted to stop rattling from the passenger front door. My rear window has also leaked a couple of times, but only when I pressure washed it. But it still does not leak all the time. You all should complain and maybe help out other owners who feel that their truck is the only one having the problem.

Do you know the root cause of the "rattle behind the dash" was? I occassionally have a metallic sounding rattle that sounds like it's right behind my Bose head unit, but it comes and goes...hasn't done it for about 6 months now, but probably will start right when I'm out of warranty.

Sure, I actually drove the mechanic a few miles down the road so that he would finally hear it after complaining to them multiple times that it was doing it but they could never duplicate it until I drove him around. He stated that it was behind and underneath the radio. He corrected me and called it a knocking noise and not a rattle, as if there was a difference. I just wanted it fixed. He found that the shifter cable was vibrating against the lower dash vent intermittently.

That rattle occurred off and on for about a year but the past couple of months I herad it almost everyday. Since I had it serviced about a week ago I haven't heard the noies. YET! I should have complained about the window leak also but to late now. Let me know if you or your dealer find the same thing. I hope this helps.

I've been having a single streak of water on the drivers side of the rear hatch show up after washing the truck. Think I'll mention it to the dealership and see if they can fix it. For others who have had this fixed was the window gasket replaced or the hinges adjusted?

I noticed streaks on the inside of the rear window on the way home the day we bought it. I've seen it a couple of other times too. It hasn't bothered me enough to mention it. I've been fighting with the dealer about the alignment, which has been a bigger issue for me.

I noticed a leak on the rear glass hatch a couple of times after washing (not with jet wash) so I carefully checked the seal, which was ok, then I noticed that the loop of wiring to the rear screen demister was trapped between the glass and the seal. So it may be worth checking that first just to be sure. I missed it a couple of times myself.
