From driving on normal local streets and freeways we are seeing an amount of paint erosion on the front of the rear wheel upsets and as the dealership first told us 'if there is any problem in the first year we will fix it', I think that we should bring the chipped paint to their attention.

Have any others here gone through asking for a section repaint and had good dealership results. Thanks.

What are wheel upsets?

Generally, I get up underneath the truck shortly after any off-road trip, (about 1/month), to perform the following maintenance:

• Remove roof basket and attached tools/accessories;
• Allow engine, drivetrain & exhaust to cool, then spray-off engine;
• Inspect serpentine belt for debris, position and other damage;
• Clean-out/inspect undercarriage, skid plates, cross-members, suspension, steering, drive components, etc.;
• Remove any rust/corrosion found and apply undercoating/primer/touch-up paint as appropriate for location;
• Drop spare tire and remove accumulated sand/dirt/debris;
• Clean wheel wells and inside of wheels and check for lost wheel balancing weights;
• Check brake lines, air bags and air bag hoses for damage;
• Disassemble and clean brake pads if it sounds like sand/dirt has gotten stuck inside;
• Wash truck (saddest part), including inside door jambs, checking door edges for rust;
• Polish-out any brush marks, touch-up any scratches;

So far, the only place I see any rust is on the exhaust system, and this is minor (and to be expected). I will probably go with a Gibson stainless steel exhaust if/when this one rusts through.

Is the area you're talking about included in the above?

Kinda off-topic but if I had to do it all over again I would NOT choose the Gibson again.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, what don't you like about the Gibson and do you know of anything better that's available?

I was wondering the same thing. I even googled it & came up with nada. I'd kind of like to check & see if I'm having a problem with the paint as well, but I'm just not sure where to look exactly.

I have chipped paint, on the bumper and one on the hood.

I've been getting rust/orange spots here and there on the lower half of my Pathfinder.

I read somewhere that it's the metallic shaving bits sticking to the body.

I've found them fairly easy to remove by using WD-40. I left the SUV in the warm sun, that way the bits of tar are easily removable with WD.
