I scoped the cylinders and they look fine. I think the tensioner failure was actually caused by the main timing chain tensioner guide. I didn't notice it when I initially installed it but the guide has a little bit of a twist. When I installed the new tensioner, it didn't set flat against the guide....

You were right, eieio. The main timing chain tensioner failed. It only has a thousand miles on it. When I pulled the cover, everything looked fine. When I started to turn the crank, the tensioner just collapsed all the way down to nothing. The cams were just flipping forward when it hit the backside...

What new noise is this?

I replaced the heads on my 06 Pathfinder with reman heads. It's been running great for the last thousand miles. No noise. Peppy and smooth. I was sitting at a stop light this morning and this noise started. Any guesses what this might be, besides another tear down? It took me two months for the last...

So guess what I just found in my Fel-Pro TCS45997 Timing Cover Gasket Set? It has gallery gaskets in it. Who'd a thunk. $7.84 on Amazon. They appear to be quality gaskets.Steel and silicone.

But it only has one of the Collared O-rings in the package. I don't know why it doesn't have two. Oh well.

Rock Auto has remanufactured heads for a $416.89 + $125.00 core. They come with cams and lifters. I'd ask them about the damaged cam you'd be sending back but for a rebuilt head with cams, it's a pretty good price. Just an option.

I'm going to use the green scotch pads on the pistons. The blue isn't doing anything. The green takes it off in about 30 minutes per piston. I'm being as careful as I can but there is no way to keep it out of the coolant passages. I've got a metal tube just small enough to go into the passages. I'm ...

Thanks for the info. I tried that and some other things but both screws ended up snapping off. I've ordered a replacement.

Well, now I have a conundrum. All the screws came out of the gallery cover plate but two. Two came partially out and then stopped. The head started stripping out so I stopped. They aren't open on the backside so I don't understand why they won't come out. I put on some PB and tried working them back...

You can get a gasket and bolt kit for the VQ40DE for $30+shipping if you know where to look: https://conceptzperformance.com/czp-rear-timing-cover-oil-gallery-gasket-set-vq40de-nissan-frontier-05-pathfinder-05-12-xterra-05-15-13533-vq40de-kt_p_31978.php And me, personally, I wouldn't use RTV. Adding new oil helps, for a bit. The gaskets that leak, or pop out in my case, are paper gaskets so the high mileage oil doesn't really help with that. Here's a link to an image of what mine looks like. It's right next to the left side hole where the cams come through the rear case. I was working on...

Low oil pressure

Yes, both have to be removed. If you are replacing it because of low oil pressure, it may not be the oil pump. There have been issues on a number of VQ engines causing low oil pressure due to failure of the oil gallery cover gaskets on the back side of the rear timing cover. See link: https://www.m...

Lifter noise.

This is a long post. Sorry. I'm long winded. I finally found some time to dig into this task and I found out what was making the noise, and more problems. The noise was being caused by a broken timing chain tensioner spring on the secondary timing chain on the right side. The spring was broke...

Yep. They're knocking like hell. Probably because of the low oil pressure. I'm not looking forward to it.
