I just picked up a 2006 LE and am only seeing around 13 with mixed driving. I'm sort of disappointed. Only getting about 200 miles out of a tank. It seems like I'm always at the gas station. It's mostly about how you drive and what kind of mixed driving you do. It eats gas the most when you aggress...
I have Legend HCx, and use it for hiking, backpacking, and Search & Rescue. I only have topo maps loaded to it. Reception is great, and battery life is good even though I use rechargables.
I don't intend to do any serious off-roading in my pathfinder, but... I would feel better if the slider extended longer as you're worried. I did my offroading in my Xterra before the pathfinder... It could be your rear springs. How easy is it for you to push the rear bumper down? If it's really easy to push it and let it go up and down, your springs might be dead (possibly along with your shocks.)
