88 Pathfinder - petrol gauge not working

Hello everyone.

I've just gotten an 88 PF, and while i'm happy with the condition the engine is in etc, the petrol/gasoline gauge doesn't respond and always stays on E.

Is this a common problem and if there a fix for it, or should i get into the habit of topping up every few days?

Thanks!

how difficult is the timing belt change? can a novice do it by himself or should it be done by a shop?
