It seems like the ones I see on the road a lot are either Yakima or Thule. Although on Amazon, the Keeper bags get really good ratings. Another one I've heard good things about is Sherpak.

Actually in my wife's car, she has a stick and I sometimes downshift to slow the car rather than tapping the brakes. I was taught that this was OK and isn't hard on the engine plus it will save the brakes. As far as riding the brakes down a hill that's not good which is why your Pathfinder is downsh...

Does your caravan brake lights go on when hooked up? I would think the trailer light hook-up wiring isn't directly connected to the car's brake lights so it shouldn't cause them to stop working. I'm sure the Nissan tech has a wiring diagram to show where the trailer hook up wire connect to the car's...

If it's just a grocery go-getter and commuter car, then the 2x2 would be fine. I would think you'd get a little better mileage too.
