The only light I ever recall seeing over there is the green light when cruse is on.
Of course that may only mean that mine are out too.

Yep, that seems to be the case. Except there nothing to jump, you have to pull the PCM down from under the dash and put it into diagnostic mode.

After my timing belt breaking and putting in a new distributor I need to set the initial timing to 15°BTDC.
To do this I need to place the computer in "self diagnostic mode". The manuals aren't spelling this out to me in plan English, any help out there?

Yeah, I agree. That's sound advice.
I've done the waterpump every 100k, but when I did it 5k back I didn't do the tensioner. Completely my own fault.
When I hit 400k, I'll be sure to do the tensioner now mater how it seems.

New belt, new tensioner, new harmonic balancer and away he goes!
I can confirm, based on the opinion of two dealerships and my own experience that the VG33E engine is in fact a non interference engine.

I run Castrol High-Mileage in our '97. 310K and it still burns no oil.
(I also run it in my '79 CJ)
I am not big on additives, but have run SeaFoam in the crankcase from time to time.

We've got a 97 with 310,000 on it.
Never given us a lick of trouble.
Plenty of up keep work though. Had to replace all the rear suspension (not the axel) to cure death wobble.
Steering rack bushings went a while ago, easy fix.
timing belt every 100k.
Just shredded the 300k timing belt, tensioner ...

The tensioner was the culprit. Completely exploded, my fault for not replacing it when i was in there.
I have to order the tensioner and the crankshaft pulley, so it'll be a week before I know how well it survived.
Couldn't find definitive word on line about the VG33E being non-interference, but the ...

Just incase anyone is following along.
Timing belt shredded.
I replaced it about 5k ago, second time I did it. Supprised it would happen after 5k, I'd think sooner if I'd gotten something wrong.
Bad tensioner? Didnt replace.
But also the carnk shaft pully has seperated! The two larger, outer groved ...

Well...
Frustrated, I decided to go back to basics.
Foolishly, I guess, I hadnt checked to see if the dizzy was turning...I aint.
I am guessing that the timing belt snapped.
If so it is my fault as I changed it about 5k ago. :(
No noise when it died, none at all.
Any oppinion on valve train damage ...

Our 1997 Pathy with 310K just up and quit the other day while driving.
It had been running fine, no hesitation, misses, nothing.
The starter will turn the engine just fine, but no spark.
In addition to replacing the distributor, wires and plugs, I have run all of the troubleshoots in the Haynes ...

Howdy all.
My real love is my CJ but the wife has a '97 Pathfinder that keeps me greasy.
Not not really true. It has 310,000 on it and hasent given us many problems at all...until now.
Anyway, I look forward to your sage advise and contributing what I can.
