I bought a deck of 3x5 cards and wedged them between the tire and the wheel. If you tape the tire off, make sure it is nice and clean or the painter's tape won't stick.
Shrock sells skid plates for about $150 shipped, and they are heavy duty. They are designed for the Frontier, but customer service confirmed to me that they will fit the Pathfinder.
