Shift lock gear selector

Postby sdg1963 » Mon Aug 31, 2015 5:29 am

Good Day,

2008 Pathfinder SE

Lately I have been having issues putting the car in gear, it has been hard to get the gear selector to move out of the park position.

I've had to remove the shift lock tab, and depress the shift lock over-ride to get the car in gear.

Any suggestions as to what the problem could be?
TIA

I had a similar issue about a month ago on a 2008 SE. In my case, it was the micro-switch that sits behind the shift actuator and is sold as part of the entire shifter assembly. The micro-switch has a small, metal lever on it that engages part of the shifter as it is pushed forward into park. Once the lever is depressed on the switch, it will allow the actuator to work. It's almost impossible to see the micro-switch without removing the shift actuator on the left side of the shifter or looking through the shifter from the passenger side, either of which requires removal of the center console.
I originally thought the $50 actuator was the problem, so I purchased it. It sits in a plastic bracket on the left side of the shifter and is a real pain in the tail to switch out because of the rods. If you remove the two, Philips head screws holding the bracket to the side of the shifter, you can move it out and carefully disconnect the micro-switch from the back of the bracket to make it easier to work on. So, what I did was tweak the steel lever on the micro-switch a little so it would better contact the shifter when it was pushed against it. Then a re-attached the switch to the back of the actuator bracket and reassembled, testing the shift lock several times before re-installing the center console. While there are other possible problems that can cause this, such as a bad brake switch, this is what I found on mine. It's been working fine since.
