SLIP/VDC, ABS, BRAKE and 4WD

Postby pathology » Mon Apr 04, 2011 11:55 am

Driving on a very muddy road coming back from fishing in Wyoming, I had the following lights come on in sequence, SLIP/VDC, ABS, BRAKE and 4WD. The 4WD position indicator (with the turned wheels) was blank, it was stuck in 4WD, and had no ABS, VDC. Drove home (bricking it, as I was 30 miles up a rarely used track and way out of cellphone service), and let it sit overnight. The next morning, turned it on and in the reverse order, the lights all went back out when I started driving. It's at the dealer, who's initial idea that I had 'driven in too much mud' doesn't seem to make much sense. I'll update with their diagnosis.

I found a reference in one other post, with it being a brake harness, we'll see...

Awesome. Apparently, there is nothing wrong. No codes stored, so I have to wait for it to happen again. Could be worse, I guess.

I had this same issue with a brand new (at the time) 06 pathfinder se. i took it in to nissan 5 times before they told me finally they were going to have to have an engineer come out and look at it. i promptly traded the vehicle in.

good luck let us know how it turns out!

Unless you have the problem when you pull up to the dealership, it's very hard for them to duplicate the same problem you were having. That's what sucks. You know something is wrong, but when you go to get it looked at by any mechanic, the problem has gone away for the moment and won't come back on until you drive away. I hate that. Hopefully it won't happen again.

I've had this happen, though I didn't notice the sequence of the lights coming on like you mentioned. It happened after turning the 4x4 on and off numerous times while driving down a gravel road with lots of snow drifts on it.

Suddenly, all the lights came on as you saw and I lost the VDC and ABLS. It was weird, as I have come to rely on these features. Anyways, after a couple engine shutdown and restarts, the lights went out and this problem has never come back.

I read somewhere that if the VDC system sees a conflict in sensor readings, it goes into 'safe mode' which is what you saw. Mud or snow on a sensor, or a intermittent contact due to moisture intrusion could possibly cause this.

I've had this happen too.

Never thought too much of it. It's only happened when snow or mud is involved. Mainly when snow drifts are on the roads that i travel and i usually have to turn vdc off anyways because otherwise it will just slow you down.

Good luck and hopefully this isn't a problem.

Thanks for the support! When I picked the car up, I asked to speak with the Tech who performed the check. He mentioned the possibility of the VDC getting overwhelmed and shutting down - or going into a safe mode. He suggested stopping on the next section of road that wasn't very muddy, shutting the car off, starting it, and continuing to drive - which should reset the safe mode fairly quickly. I'll try turning VDC off next time, as I found it more distracting than helpful. That's not to say that I don't love the feature on ice and snow, but foot deep mud seems to confuse it a little.

One positive, I did catch an 18" rainbow, which was nice.

Thanks again for your help, Al.

I had similar symptoms when battery died. After a few kilometers straight driving with speed more than 40km/h and restart the engine all went back to normal. After battery replacement never happened again even if driving in deep snow.

That's an interesting connection, I'll get my battery checked and see how it's holding up. Thanks!

I had the same issue ... it happened a few months ago as I drove through a snow bank left behind by a snow plough after a winter storm (I know... I know... but it was too much fun to pass up.)

I have clearly been putting off this repair for quite a while but today, I took off the front wheels to replace the pads and rotors and lo and behold: the passenger side wheel speed sensor wire was broken, as though someone had taken a wire cutter to them. (More likely a chunk of ice cut through them...)

A couple of pig tail connections to reconnect the wires, a bit of solder and some electrical tape and the codes are gone. Nearly good as new.

I just ordered a new wheel sensor as I don't expect the MacGyver repair job to last. Still, a $95 part is a lot less than what I expected my dealership to charge me to diagnose and fix this issue. :D

ABS, VDC, and Slip lights

Postby MnPathy » Wed Jun 18, 2014 3:12 pm

After having the lights on for several years now and not really caring at all why they were on I decided to bring my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder into the shop for a diagnostic. Heres what they came up with, the Rear Right wheel speed sensor code popped upalong with the steering angle sensor, after getting an alignment the steering angle sensor code was no longer there and after replacing the $350 wheel speed sensor cable was replaced, low and behold the code still showed up and the lights were still on the dash. Well the nissan dealership in Rochester, Mn took several more hours and zero cost too me because there diagnostic never fixed the problem. The Tech found a broken wire next to the firewall on the passenger side and he cut, stripped and patched the area and what do you know the problem is fixed and after all that and a alignment i was only down $750, not too shabby for a whole days worth of work. the highlight was driving there 2013 Sentra getting 40+ MPG though, too bad I will never see that in the pathy

I have the same problem with my 2009 Path. 4WD, ABS, brake light, VDC OFF, and SLIP lights are all on. I have tested all ABS sensors with a multimeter and they seem to be working fine.
In addition to that, the speedometer and odometer have both stopped working. The only code I got from scanning was P1622.

These ABS wheel speed sensors work on a duty cycle and can't be tested with a multimeter like those on Nissans years ago. There is a special Kent-Moore tool that Nissan and Infiniti dealers (should) have to component test the wheel speed sensors to determine if they are good or not.
That said, you may not have an ABS system issue, at all. When the ECM detect an engine management issue, it will disable the traction control system, which will illuminate the ABS/SLIP/VDC/4x4 warning lights.
The P1622 has to do with the fuel injector coding from what I've been able to look up. We don't have the 2.5L diesel engine in the USA, so I don't have any experience on that particular engine. I've found a few threads on Navaras with that engine and the P1622 code and most of them talk about having the fuel injectors re-coded to the ECM using a Nissan CONSULT II scan tool with a couple of recommendations of cleaning the mass air flow sensor. The best advice I can give is to first check the brake fluid in the master cylinder and make sure it's not low. If that's okay, I would ignore those ABS and traction control system warning lights for now and concentrate on the P1622 issue. There's a chance that fixing that will cause the ECM to enable the traction control system to start working, causing those related warning lights to turn off.

Thanks for the quick reply!
The brake fluid level is fine. I haven't checked if the brake fluid sensor is working fine though.
I will get it checked again by the dealer and request the coding to be done. They recommended changing the injectors on my last visit and I ignored the suggestion.

What do you have to say about the speedometer and odometer not working? I don't think the two problems are related. I think the odometer and speedometer rely on the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and not the wheel speed sensors to give readings. I thought of changing the VSS but just can't locate it anywhere on the transmission or transfer case. Do you think changing the VSS may help solve speedometer/odometer problem? And where exactly is the VSS located.

When my rear abs harness went bad on my 05, the speedo and odometer would continue to count up even when the vehicle was not moving. The speedo and odometer get their info from the wheel speed sensors.
