tachometer not working right!

Postby plusoneten » Mon Feb 15, 2010 10:02 am

hey guys

i just bought a 1994 pathfinder 4x4 with 180k on it. pretty solid truck. one of the things thats broken on it is the tach.

when the cars off, its at 0 rpm like it should, and when the engines running, the tach stays at about 3000 rpm and barely moves at all when you rev it.

Id like to get it working, but i dont even know where to start... anyone know?
also, it has an electronically controlled transmission... so does this mean that if i fix the tach it will shift better? it shifts decent as is, but i feel like it could be shifting better...

it already has an aftermarket transmission cooler attached to the AC core... not a very big one though, but atleast its not that.

Hey I have a 95 Pathfinder, they have the same gauges.

When I bought mine tach didn't work at all, bounced all over the place, what ever it wanted to do..

It's either:
Get used to it,

or replace the tachometer unit.
I took a chance since I really didn't know either, but I got a tach unit from a junkyard. Usually they only sell the gauge cluster as a whole but I got lucky because someone stole the speedometer out of the cluster, gave it to me for $5. Anyway, to replace the tach you have to literally take apart the whole bottom driver side dash to get to the cluster. Then it's just a take out, replace..

I'm not sure if it was worth it, but I just have to have a tach.. It took about 40 minutes from start to finish, everything back in place. There is a diagram somewhere online, but I just took the logical screws out until I got to the cluster. Be careful though.

Also the tranny and the tach are not correlated to one another-totally irrelevant systems.. But it could change your driving behavior just having your tach. After I got mine replaced, I keep the revs lower, ended up getting almost 2mpg's better!

Someone call me out if I'm wrong

i read somwhere that the electronically controlled transmission takes RPM into account when it shifts.

there must be an RPM sensor somewhere... if theres a problem with that sensor, would it screw up the transmissions shift pattern? anyone aver replace this sensor before?

on the other hand, if its just the cluster, that shouldnt affect the shifting...

Well the tach only shows what the engine speed is, it doesn't control it.

But I don't know how the auto's are, I'm sure theres some control module somewhere, which would be causing your bad shifts. Again I'm not sure though, lets just say I love my manual!

tachometer

In your case, it is certain that the tachometer is not working. I got a cheap tachometer just last month and I find it satisfactory and reasonable for the price. Just in case you needed one, it's worth it a try.

Tach bounce

This is a known issue with this vintage PF. The only cure I have found is to replace the head unit (in the dash), which is a PITA.

Failing that, you can install an aftermarket tach.

Sounds familiar... haha. I used to just give it a good !wack! on the dash, and it would stabilize, But now its fried i am afraid. I may go hit up a "pick and pull" for a new one. If i get stuck i may ask you a question.

Hi everybody, just jumping in. Bought a 95 XE 198000 and the tach jumps around on it, too. Looked down, and I was at 8000 rpms in third gear! It seems Nissan put an F-1 engine in mine. :)

Just picked up a 1995 Pathfinder and its been a great little rig. Had a few minor issues but Im stumped on one of them.

The cruise does not work but all of the lights light up and all seems to be in order. However my Tach is messed up as well. It pegs out as soon as I start the engine. Could this be sending a message to the cruise to shut down?

Was in a car this weekend that got close to red line and shut off the cruise by design. Made me think that maybe my cruise issue is related to the tach issue.

Any ideas?

Where is this resistor located on the truck and do you remember the part number and where you got it from? Mine is doing the same thing, sometimes it will work just fine, sometimes it wont work at all and other times it will just go all over the place.

I don't, I had a shop put it in. You can google it or call a shop and ask where it is, also the price was about $16-20 and I got it from auto zone I wish I had the part number I'm sorry just gk there and say you need a resistor for the tach in the cluster
