engine sputters in 4wd

Postby glockshooter » Sat Jan 03, 2015 3:55 pm

2007, v6. I just replaced the cam sensor sensor for 1 bank this summer. It seemed like the same symptom, a shudder in the drivetrain under acceleration, almost shutting off. I have no codes in the reader though. Its not a persistant shudder, just a quick hesitation. It seems to only happen when I'm in 4wd, its running smooth in 2wd. Any suggestions??

Are you sure you don't have a bad U-joint on the front driveshaft that makes it feel like a misfire? It's a common failure; in fact, I just found out I have a bad one, today!

I might as well... snowed yesterday so drove around in 4wd alot. Felt like a bump in the road, but there was no bump on the rear axles. Noticed it twice.

Thanks, that's something I didn't consider. It feels identical to the symptoms from the camshaft sensor, but without the codes.
Strange update, today we got a solid dusting of snow, maybe a quick inch, and it was doing it a lot more on my way to work.....in 2wd. U-joints all around? It's got 97k miles and I haven't done them yet.

Well, if it's doing it only in 2wd, that would suggest the rear shaft joints, if it is indeed the problem. The one that is bad on mine is on the front shaft. I have 135,000 miles on mine and they are all original, so, considering the history of bad U-joints on R51's, I'm going to replace all four joints. I have steel driveshaft yokes on my 06 LE, so for the front shaft I'm getting a pair of Moog #280 super-strength, greasable u-joints for the front shaft. For the rear shaft, I'm getting a pair of Dana/Spicer #513301X heavy-duty, premium greasable u-joints (also known as the Spicer Life Series), which are a little more money, but look like they are built a bit tougher than the Moog #270 joints, which was my second choice. I bought them all from Rockauto.com and they cost $81 with shipping. If you go with the Moog #270 joints for the rear shaft instead of the Dana units, the total cost is around $25 cheaper, if I remember correctly.

well, at least it's not a super expensive fix. I'm hoping it's not something transmission related. I read a few threads that seem to show comparable symptoms. I already have a new transmission in it, thanks to the radiator issue. That was 3 years, 30k miles ago.
It's definitely noticeable. More so im thinking when it's cold. It's enough to almost nudge you forward in the seat, that seems to be how I notice it.
