Trans oil cooler

Postby Kestral » Wed Jan 21, 2015 2:45 pm

Thinking about summer and towing my camper and I was wondering is the R51 transmission external cooler sufficient for my towing or should I plan to upgrade it to a larger unit? My camper is no more then 5,000 lbs loaded and about 23 feet long tandem axle and I have a load leveling hitch.

no problems, its smaller than mine and I've never had an issue. Won't win any races though.

Disallow do you find you spend lots of time shifting into third gear when towing? I expect it's prob smart to drop it into third on the long hills like I had to do with my 2006 Toyota 4Runner. And do you tow with (OD) locked out or not?

I drive with OD off. If you are on an incline the trans will downshift to third every so often, but never to the point I've been concerned.
