transmission oil cooler cooler

Postby atramm » Mon Aug 31, 2015 3:05 pm

Hi all,
New to the forum... new to a pathfinder too. Just got a 2012 V6 (i liked the body style better than the new ones, and like the 6000lbs tow rating better too). We're in the market for a travel trailer in the next year or so, nothing crazy, probably like 35-4000lbs, but thought Id start getting 'er ready for towing (we currently tow a boat occasionally, and never very far). Thought I'd add a transmission oil cooler... I figured there is no downside, and can only help once i start pulling. I picked up a Heydon 405 from the parts store, and though it says that size is only for a V8, I cant imagine a downside to adding a larger one... so long as it physically fits, which it looks like it will. Anybody done this? Any other suggestions for making it a better tow vehicle? Thanks!

Thank you! I have heard of the airlift 1000, and its on my list. I think I'll return this tranny cooler and get one that i know will fit! I'll have to do some research on the power tuner... i dont know much about them, and each one i look at says it cant be shipped to CA... lame.

I think you should save your money on the transmission cooler. The factory unit works fine along with the one in your radiator. Also keep in mind the factory fill ATF is synthetic and much better than conventional ATF. Air Lift 1000's and Bilstein HD rear shocks seem to be the ticket on these vehicles if you are going with the stock suspension.

Transmission cooler is the cheapest upgrade the original radiator can go out anytime. I'm thinking hes already aware of the transmission problems due to radiator.

Additional trans cooler is not needed. I've been running with just the air/oil cooler in the front (factory part) and a bypassed radiator for over 5 years now. I tow a large travel trailer about 8-10 times a year, and have had no issues with overheating whatsoever. Truck just rolled 260k kms, 160k kms of that with the bypassed rad.

I have been quite religious about trans fluid changes though. Use the Valvoline Maxlife ATF from Walmart.

2012 models don't have the radiator failure issues that are prone on 2005-2010 models.
