Front passenger suspension woes

Postby skipfletcher » Tue Mar 08, 2016 8:40 am

2001.5 here, ~165k mi.

I have a clunking sound from my front passenger sire when going over bumps, and at highway speeds if the road isn't very smooth, I can get quite a bit of hard vibration.

I have replaced the sway bar bushings, as well as the sway bar link arm on that side, and the problem went away for months. Now it's back again.

The shocks and struts are definitely due for replacement, but I wanted to hear if anything jumped out to anyone before I go through that hoopla.

I would jack the pass side tire off the ground and inspect the suspension. Grab the tire at 12 and 6 and see if you can wiggle it or if there is play. Do the same at 9 and 3. 12/6 will insicate a bad ball joint. 9/3 will indicate tie rod ends.

Another option is keep it on the ground and have a buddy push the vehicle and replicate the clunk while you inspect under it.

First thing though, check both sway bar end links to make sure one didn't come loose.

My money is on the strut tower bushing.
