Buying 1996 Pathfinder

Postby kirtstew » Sun Nov 06, 2016 10:18 am

Hi guys. New here. Looking at buying a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 manual w/87000 miles on it. Just wondering what to watch out for when i go look at it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Rust is the main thing, especially around the bottom of the front strut towers; there is a recall on this. Bushings in the upper and lower, rear suspension links will split over time and make for a swaying condition at highway speeds. Oil pan rear seal and/or rear main seal leaks are not uncommon. Check/listen for cracked exhaust manifolds. You'll want to know when the timing belt was last replaced...if ever. While the interval is 105,000 miles, I wouldn't go more than 6-7 years on a belt regardless of mileage.

Exhaust Manifold

There is a recall on the exhaust manifold. Mine cracked and when I took it to the shop the service guy told me he had just gotten an email on it. Got it done free and it wasnt a dealer who replaced it.
