Stepping up to 35s

Postby Code Pathfinder » Wed Apr 21, 2021 9:15 pm

I have not posted in a while on the forum but I thought I would share with the group that I am making the jump to 35 inch tires.

To do this, you obviously need to run a large enough lift kit on your pathfinder, commit to trimming your front and rear fenders, and re-gear to a lower gear ratio.

So with that said, here is my checklist for 35s in my case:

1. Titan swap with a 6 inch drop bracket kit - Check

2. 6 inches of lift in the rear - Check

3. Rebuilt R18- differential with 3.69 gearing - Check

4. Rebuilt R200 Differential from a G35 with 3.69 gearing - Check

5. Front and Rear fender wells trimmed - Check

I will be running 315/75/16 all terrain tires from General.

I will report back here with photos of the Pathfinder with the new gearing and 35s. A shop is doing this massive project for me starting on Saturday and hopefully ending next Wednesday/Thursday.

Nice, I saw your thread on CF. Let us know how it turns out. My goal is to go 35" tires too in a couple years, it may come sooner, as my factory 18" wheels are corroded from years of salt/rust so I may downsize to 17" wheels with 35" tires. I've already had to trim my front fenders for 33" tires. I'm down to cut more off no problem. I'll be attempting all this all on a 2" suspension lift with no body lift. Just major cutting of my fenders.

Plenty of R51s being parted out nowadays that if I ever needed a pair of uncut fenders, off to the classified sections or junk yard I go.

Nice. Could you have gone with the monster 325/85/16 with your amount of lift? Tire would be very heavy though

Looks hard core.
Will you take it on an overlanding trip sometime?
Or some serious off-roading?

Ok so overall thoughts so far driving the Pathfinder:
    • You can definitely feel a difference when stepping on the gas with 35s and 3.69 gearing.
    • It drives how I expected it to drive. Slow to start but slowly gets faster as you drive down the road.
    • It is sluggish from launch and 4.10s would have been the better choice for gearing.
    • the transmission downshifts a lot when I am braking.
    • Overall, is it drivable on 3.69 gearing? Yes, it is but 4.10s for gearing are the better choice.
    • The steering wheel feels sloppy when turning but I figured its due to the tie rod ends from fabtech and I will eventually need to upgrade to a full Heim Link steering system.

Looks great man.

What's your front caster? That could affect your steering.

Front caster is dead on accurate now thanks to those SPC upper control arms.

The rear suspension is a different story.

Camber and toe are completely off and there’s no more adjustment left without more offset bushings.

The upper control arm offset bushings weren’t enough so I ordered a new set of European Pathfinder lower control arms and spring bucket arms.

To pair those with Super Pro Suspension Rear lower control arm offset bushings and toe bushings for the coil spring arm.

Should get close to a full degree of +- camber adjustment again and close to 0.5+ toe adjustment.
