Spare tire-odd question…

Postby outoforder » Wed Sep 15, 2021 6:13 pm

Original owner 2005 SE…. Will a stock rim be able to be used underneath the vehicle as the spare? In other words can I hang one of the stock rims with a tire mounted, from the spot where the spare/steel rim was?

The (my 2005 SE) spare is full size, so you should have no issue.

Our spare tire is not a mini-me, and the overall dimensions between an 18 and 16 rim+tire is minimal for sake of the speedo.

Same for me; I have an LE, alloy 17" rim with P265/65R17 tire for my spare.

Follow up question... Do you notice any damage to your spare rim from keeping it under there? I would like to buy a fifth rim to match, and then rotate all five every year, but I'm worried that it'll be beat to shit under there. I don't want to spend the cash on the rim if it's gonna look like shit when I rotate them.
I don't roll on a lot of gravel roads though, so maybe it's fine if I'm taking it out and washing it every six months?

Your question would depend of the area you live in. I live in southern California where it rarely snows so no salt on the road to worry about. In my shoes, I don't have any issues with keeping a spare wheel in good condition where I live year round.

I have a tire fit one size above stock and it fits fine in that factory spare tire spot.

It is stock 18 inch wheels with 265/65-18 tires in lieu of the stock 265/60-18, so approx an inch larger wheels diameter than stock.
Still fits.
Its an exact copy of all the other wheels I have on the car (stock wheels fitted with 265/65-18)

No damage to it of any kind in normal driving and light offroading.

Pics are here, a few posts down this thread:

(In hard core offroading there might be some damage for the spare in that position it is gets impacted by rocks etc, which is why committed roaders like to use external tire carriers.)

All I can tell you is that my steel rim spare looked like garbage after being under the truck for 16 years. It is rusty and very dirty. It still had the original bf Goodrich long trail tire on there which was completely deformed and dry rotted. I bought the cheapest tire I could and had that mounted on the spare rim and put back under the truck. The new OEM rim to replace the one my daughter bent was surprisingly cheap-under $200.

Also while I’m here I will throw out a plug for Yokohama Geolandar A/T tires. I’m on my second set on the pathy and if the truck last that long (‘my daughter doesn’t wreck it :D )would probably throw a third set on there. I recently put a set of BFG K02’s on my Titan and they are excellent.
