Steering wheel controlls not working

Postby labsy » Sat Nov 13, 2021 6:09 am

Hi,

I just bought another 2010 Pathfinder, this time V6 dCi, which has after chip tuning 280 HP and is pleasure to drive, especially compared to my other one with 4-cyl diesel engine and 174 HP :D But despite being younger, steering wheel buttons for audio, navigation, and cruise controll do not work. None of them.
I heard other forums taling about some "clock spring", which I guess is something for horn contacts. But I do not know what type of connectivity is used in steering wheel...most probably some kind of flat spiral cable. I guess.

EDIT: Even horn does not work like it shoukd...I must jump the center of s/w like crazy to hear barely sounding horn, more like a cricket, not a horn.
And Some controls work when I turn steering wheel full left.

Ideas?

Horn wire still goes through the spiral and it winds up (no pun intended) in a different circuit.
Horn has a different connector I think at the back of it.

Steering Control wires use specific resistance feedback to the computer to work. Both the left and right steering wheel controls connect to the same connector under the air bag. If the tiny cables inside are even the least bit broken or brittle, the voltage drops are being affected.

So if there is a short, or it detects unwanted resistance, nothing will occur.
The horn wire goes through the spiral to a different circuit to power the horn.

I would suspect you have a problematic spiral and it needs to be replaced.

The air bag connectors go through the spiral I believe. Do you have any trouble codes for air bag stored?

@TooMuchControl, thank you.
Well, I've scanned a dozen of TCs, and deleted all of them, as I do not know what's fresh and what not. Actually, this made me mad, angry on myself - how could I be so reckless not to check those prior to buying?!!! At least I could deal for better price.

Emmm.... might it be that all codes marked below are related to this broken spiral cable?

Check out this thread. Replacing this spiral cable assembly cured a few problems for me.

+1. Failed spirals are very common on R51's and all the close relatives (Frontier, Xterra, A60 Titan, TA60 Armada). Next you'll most likely get an airbag light from the driver's bag, and eventually everything on the wheel will quit.
