Preliminary review DT Moto headlights NOW WITH PICS!

Postby palmerwmd » Wed Feb 02, 2022 12:09 am

I just got these on today.

Pros:

- decent fit
- Look good, updates the look of the SUV notably IMO
- No complaints on light patterns ( I was at first skeptical but just got back from a 45 minute night time drive to test, patterns seem fine)
- I thought my existing lenses were not all that bad in clarity but this is a step up
- Unit is inexpensive.
- Beam Height adjustments significantly easier than on the stock unit. The "screwwheel" is easy to get to (even on the battery side!) and if you have decent hand strength can be turned w/o a screwdriver.
So its easy to have the light against a wall then put your hand in there and turn the screw while you look at the beam on the wall as you turn the adjust.

So why call the review preliminary?
Because at this low price I do not expect OEM quality and so
- I do not yet know how they hold up in hard rain.
- Do not yet know how quickly they will degrade.

Nice, at this point it's better than hazy yellow headlights and it's relatively to replace 5 yrs from now if needed to. I'll probably end up on Rockauto.

I tried a pair of Ebay headlamps on my 1st gen Frontier and the light pattern is worse than my stock yellow hazy headlamps even with brand new Xenon bulbs. The beam is brighter, but it's kind of all over the place. I will have to replace the Ebay headlamps on my Frontier with a set of Rockauto ones.

Agreed.
I was also skeptical about how the patterns would be on this inexpensive unit.

At first I thought I saw some "off patterns" on the parking lot.
but when actually driving it at nite it seemed to be patterned about as well as OEM, both High beams and low beams.

And I was in the mood to modernize the look of the front end a bit so I was willing to accept some risk of possibly getting a poor fit or some such..
For now it seemed to have worked out.:)

Thank you. :D
I think I could have taken better pics from closer.
Maybe I'll add another tomorrow.

Also had LOTS of heavy rain today.
So tomorrow I will inspect if I got condensation or any other water intrusion.

Added another Pic for good measure.

Also drove the car through some light rain today.
yesterday was very heavy rain for a while ( albeit just sitting mostly not driving)
In any event, so far no condensation or water intrusion that I can detect.

Lovely.
Very Lovely indeed.

I purchased the Spyder set when I first boarded the R51 train.
So far, they've held up perfectly with no condensation, fading, hazing after 4 years.

I'm banking that you will have zero issues with these babies.

Thanks! :)
Please tell us more about the "spyder set"
is it from same manufacturer?

For some reason, I can't upload pics?
In any case, I had bought these on Amazon at a ridiculously low price of...$110 CND for the pair around Xmas time. The next day they went to $375 CND.

Apparently they only made this style for the pre 2008 R51s? So far, 4 years later, they are still perfect.
I was empowered by this guy. Props to him.

Best upgrade for the money I think.

I think there are a bunch of manufacturers that make similar models now, and they all look very close.
By the handling, they don't feel that expensive, and they are plastic.

At the time, I was skeptical on the durability of them, so I kept the originals around for a couple of years.

I would highly recommend them. a bit of trick to get them lined up.

Our data base as issues and is still getting fixed from the big outage we had last month so the pic attachment feature does not work right now.. :(

The way I put my pics in was the old fashioned way via external hosting and then linking the image url via our [img] function. :)

I also still kpet my originals just in case.

The big patterns seems good and match OEM , but I do have some patterns inside my patterns if that makes any sense , that the OEM does not.
So in terms of smooth light delivery the OEM is probably better.
Thanks a bunch for the links and the quick reply :)

Update:

No issue with condensation or leaking in our recent heavy rains.

Thanks for your review so far. I think I'm going to try the Cerakote headlight kit first. Not really high on my priority list at the moment though.

Same here.
But is there a specific kit you recommend?

Most likely Griot's from your local Autozone for $30. It comes with the Cerakote finishing wipe like ShipFixer was saying. I almost bought it yesterday while I was there, but I have to do some suspension and cooling system maintenance first.
