V8 Brake Upgrade - using V6 rotors

Postby TooMuchControl » Sat Dec 03, 2022 9:33 am

Question:

On many part sites, the V6 rotors are compatible with the V8 calipers, within the specifications.
Same thickness, etc.
Raybestos - on their catalog page, list both truck specialty disk sizes for the the V8 (11.65" and 12.6")

What would be the benefit of going to a larger rotor? I would have to assume that the V8 pad contact area is the same on both the V6 and V8 rotors.

If there was to be a leverage increase/change, it would have to come as the result of the caliper being mounted more outboard of the rotor hub - it's not the case.

Would it not be equal to purchasing a longer handle wrench, only to choke up on it?

My only thought would be that for heavy use or aggressive driving....?

Thank you for any input.

Larger rotors are generally better as they provide a larger heat sink for the kinetic energy of braking to be converted into thermal energy.
The larger the heat sink the more braking before you experience fade.

Agreed on the premise of better heat dissipation.

I'm waaaaay overthinking small details here. LOL.

I did the V8 upgrade on my ‘05. The increase in stopping power was immediately noticeable, especially with my camper attached driver through the mountains. In my experience with bicycle disc brakes, a larger diameter rotor has more braking force and cooling efficiency. Like you mentioned, leverage.

Thanks!
I've ordered all the pieces in and waiting for the deliveries. Should have this all spun up early in the new year.
