Yep, its a mystery for sure. Thanks for all your help folks. I'm gonna find some time to drop it off at the dealer and let them rob me for whatever diagnostic work they can manage. I'll update once this one is solved.

The issue is not the wheel. I replace the clockspring after the VDS light / SAS code happened. The splines are correct before and after based on the lineup marks on the wheel mount and shaft.
Are they your line up marks? Sometimes after an alignment the steering wheel needs to be readjusted. There is a maximum degree your allowed to change it, but it could be that a previous alignment required it to be moved from the marked position.

I would consider re-aligning the steering wheel, and then going somewhere big and safe and do some hard steering maneuvers to see if the problem re-presents itself.

Don't shoot me.

Just adding to the improbabilities here.
At the base of the steering column, where the column attaches to a knuckle, there is also a spline, and it's held with a tension bolt?

If it were to have been loosened for any reason in the past, by mistake, etc.

Looks like a similar spline where the steering shaft to steering rack.

This ad on ebay shows it.
