See the pictures below from adampfisters and pirate4x4.com. Luckily nobody got hurt, I wanted to share this here for all the DIY'ers. Here's the original thread regarding JAcks on that site. He was using a 3 ton HF jack and it crumbled on him under his F350.

looks like it was constructed with 16 gauge steel. no wonder it did that. Also looks like they would have exceeded the max capacity... thats a big pumpkin on that diff!

97 F350 Power Stroke Diesel Crew Cab = 9800 lb

Almost 2 tons over would have definitely done that. There is probably an extra 500lb tolerance but jeez.

I think the real lesson here is not to exceed the capacity of your jack.
If he had put the jack on that shock mount , lifted one corner at a time and set it on jack stands he might have been ok.

Of course it crumbled, the idiot who was using it clearly went beyond that jack's capacity.. not to mention it doesn't look like it was seated properly on the diff, which is why it twisted in the first place.

And you shouldn't be going under a vehicle unless it's supported by stands. You couldn't pay me enough money to get under a car/truck thats only being supported by a hydraulic floor jack. That's just stupid.

I have that exact jack. I have jacked up the front and rear ends of my Pathy without a problem.

Come on guys, 9800lbs for the whole truck, the jack is only lifting the rear and most of the weight of that truck is the big iron under the hood. So the jack is lifting 5-6000 max. Still way too close to rated capacity for me but NOT over the capacity. Just a crappy floor jack. and ALWAYS use stands, they may save your life. I don't know about you but getting my chest squished is NOT the way I want to go!

I have a Harbor freight alum jack and it is pretty nice. I would have not hesitated to lift the rear of that truck.... one side at a time.

nice! If anyone climbs under any vehicle being held up with some POS, $10 jack like that - espcially without jack stands, it's survival of the fittest if it lands on your face...Plus, why would you lift a huge, expensive truck you've invested so much into with the cheapest jack you could find?!?
