hood "flapping" at highway speeds?

Postby doctahjones » Tue Nov 30, 2010 11:21 am

i'd noticed it before, but even more so on a road trip to CO i just took.

basically at speeds over 60 or so, the hood will start to "flap" like it's not shut all the way. fast you go, the more it moves. (1-3 inches it seems) it seems to mostly be just on the drivers side. i'm guessing that there's just so much air pressure coming in the grill from the speed that it's pushing up against the hood from the engine bay? anyone else notice this?

Mine does it usually starting around 80mph and gets pretty ugly by 100. It will do it at lower speeds though when traffic passes so I suppose if you had some bad winds it could do it at lower speeds. Not sure there's much to be done about it.

Crank up the bump stops a bit. Should take care of it, unless there is a more serious alignment issue with the hood hinges.

Never really noticed it on mine. Not even when I drag race it.

There's no bump stop adjustment on my '07. The bump stops are just big rubber plugs. I've stuck some 1/2" squares of weatherstrip between the hood & bump stops. It helps a bit, but the only way to really adjust the play is by removing the grill and adjusting the latch mechanism. The best bet is to probably replace the bump stops altogether with something that has more height than the original. I don't notice any play in the hood often, although sometimes a semi will pass & the hood will lift up almost an inch.
