mine did the same thing and it was the secondary timing chain guides.

what rpm did your whine come in at?

I also have a whine, mine popped up about two weeks ago. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine down from the alternator/ power steering pump area. But it only happens at lower rpms and typically, but not always is louder after the truck warms up. It totally goes away by 2500 rpm.

My whine isn't very loud. It almost sounds like a bearing whirring. Not "grindy" at all.

I just can't place where mine is coming from. I've pulled the belt and spun the alternator by hand and it felt fine.

Same with mine too. There is a service bulletin for this issue. Mine was replaced under warranty.

hmmmm interesting. I also have a whine but I was thinking it was the transmission, no other tranny issues. I am going to investigate mine further and I'll let you guys know.

Stopped at Nissan today on my way home and talked with a tech to confirm that it is the timing chain issue. Looks like I will have a busy day sometime next week :) Thanks for the info guys!

it would be interesting to know what year models, and at what mileages, these timing chain issues are occuring, and if it seems to be related to maintenance (type of oil & filter and frequency of oil/filter maintenance)
maybe a poll is in order?

Same thing just started happening to my 08 as well...currently at 85k.
I only notice it at idle though.

I'll get them to check the chain guide during the next service. Thanks for the info!

my 05 not under warranty anymore did the same thing. I took it to Nissan saying it was the service bulletin and they said it wasn't because the noise needs to be consistent even tho it pretty much was. They just replaced some belts and lubed up some parts and it hasn't whined since, it cost under 300 and i needed new belts anyways. Quick fix compared to the expensive service bulletin fix if your pathy isn't under warranty anymore

I have always used synthetic and change it religiously at 3k miles. My motor is spotless with not one bit of varnish with 128k. The Nissan Tech. I talked to also said it is not just the pathfinder more-so the vq in general. I don't know what the deal is with it but it does suck!

Just dropped mine off to the dealer for this, and the fuel sender.

My warranty just expired and its gonna cost me $900.

Its disappointing, as I expected that this would have been addressed by Nissan as a recall. What would happen if this goes unaddressed and the chain breaks? Would the engine seize ? Would you lose control of the car?

I decided to just pony up the $$ because my wife usually drive the pathy with the baby and I don't want to risk anything. I am going to write a letter to Nissan this is not the reliability that they used to have.

The two guides that make the noise are the ones on the two secondary chains, the ones that link each cam together. I guess if it was bad enough if could loosen up enough to bend some valves. The guys I talked to said he has seen some pretty badly worn guides but never any damaged motors yet.
