Strange Noise

Postby dawgn86 » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:03 pm

Good afternoon,

couple of questions on some noises I am hearing / feeling. 06 Pathfinder, 2wd, auto, 101k miles:

when coming to a stop, can feel a slight "rumble"..feels driveline related..could this be u joints?..have Michelin tires..even treadwear..I guess it could be tire related

and yesterday when driving it, I felt an intermintent vibration around 40mph

I did the rad bypass a long time ago..all fluids look good...I cant find any play in the driveshaft, but really cant give it a good twist..

any ideas?

My original tires had uneven wear and caused some noise/vibration at slow speeds and when slowing down. But that doesn't seem to be the culprit in your case. Have you checked the wheel bearings yet?

Jack up the tire and put your hand at 12 and 6 and wiggle the tire back and forth. If there's any play it could be a bad wheel bearing. A bearing can be going bad and not have much play but if there's play, something definitely is bad. Also spin the tire and see if spins smoothly and quietly. The front wheel bearing are the unit assembly type, which means they're rather expensive but easy and quick to replace.
