Weird noise when reversing.

Postby gilliam433 » Sat Aug 18, 2012 2:37 pm

Hey guys - Forgive me if this topic has been covered before. I've got an 06 Pathfinder and last week every time I began reversing the car began making this creaking/swooshing noise. The noise speeds up when the car speeds up, and if I back up in neutral (I have a steep driveway), the noise does not occur. So its only when Im in reverse gear and going backwards.

Im going to try and take a video tonight and record the noise and try to post it somewhere for you guys to hear. But in the meantime, any ideas as to what this could be?

I've heard a "low brake pad" noise/squeal and it doesn't sound anything like that really.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is a little video of the noise.

is the noise coming from the front or rear?

possible to watch the driveshaft spin with the rear on jackstands and try to pinpoint the source?

or have a mechanic pop the diff cover off, maybe a few broken teeth? usually that makes a heavy thump sound though.. :?

haha...

Well, when I lean my head out the window it sounds like its coming from the front. There have been a few occasions that I've accidentally forgot the parking brake was on when I reversed out of my driveway, but Im not sure that would be why this is happening.

Not yet. I plan on taking it to the shop this week. Honestly I think its the brakes or some sort of pebble stuck somewhere making the noise. It may be the U-joints after doing a little research online.

I'll be sure and keep you posted!

Just my luck, drive to the dealership today and for the first time in a month it doesn't squeak. Hopefully it either is gone forever OR it squeaks again tomorrow morning when they move the truck into the shop to fix a mirror that broke this weekend from a kayak falling on it. TPMS was also on at noon, and then turned off at 7 on the way to the dealer. I guess I just needed to threaten my truck with going to the dealer to get fixed to make the problems go away.

My path makes similar noise. (Sounds similar to a rubber friction)
I lifted rear wheel and went under the truck to trace the noise. Seems it is coming from transfer case or front U-joint of rear drive shaft. The noise is clearly hearable while turning the wheel or driveshaft. The U-joints looks good (visually) and there is no play.

Yeah the noise went away for the first time after a month of making noise on the drive to the dealership to get it looked at.....It has not made the noise since, so if it comes back I will let you know. Any updates on your trip to the dealer?

Well...FML the squeek is back, less than one week after it stopped during the time I took it to the dealer to get looked at.

Take it to the dealer once a week ?

Just a thunk

Sounds like something in a drum brake rubbing, checked the parking brakes ?
Noise's can travel and echo sometimes

I took mine to service at dealership and asked them to trace the noise.
In my case the sound is from rear dirve shaft front u-joint. Dealer said that it is quite a usual for PF as the u-joint gets rusted over the time. So, I'll replace the u-joints of rear dirve shaft soon. I've done this with for front drive shaft and it is a quite easy job to do.

The OE u-joints are not serviceable, there is no grease zerk to add more grease. They are considered sealed units. Over time, this seal deteriorates, and allows moisture in, allowing it to rust.

When you change your u-joints, change them with serviceable ones. Just don't forget to grease them up every so often.

Hmm, that sounds like the same issue mine is having. But I think both of mine are making noises. How involved is it to replace the u-joints? I put new plugs in this weekend which involved removing the intake manifold, would you say it is harder or easier than doing that?
