Anyone using Synthetic Oil?

Postby BHPathfinder » Sun Sep 16, 2012 8:48 am

Hi New to this forum..Just bought my wife a 2008 Pathfinder with a little under 50K on it. It was a 1 owner with all maintenance records.
I know what great vehicles these are but I am very OCD about maintenance. I would like to change the oil over to Synthetic on the next oil change. Calls for 5w30 conventional so I'm just wondering if anyone here is running Synthetic, what weight? 0-30? 0-40?

Thanks, JB

I've been using Mobil 1 5w-30 at 7,500 mile intervals during warranty but have now jumped to 10k (80k miles currently on truck). Oil analysis shows tons of life remaining at those intervals.

Mobil 1 preferred, have done Castrol and Pennzoil due to price concerns on the odd occasion. Always full synth.

I use a synthetic blend 5W30 my boss gets in bulk, mostly because it's free, with a genuine Nissan filter. If I were to buy oil, I'd use what I did in my 04 Tacoma: Walmart's Syntech 5W30 full synthetic. It's made by Royal Shell, the makers of Rotella, and it usually runs around $17-22 for a 5 gallon jug. I follow the Nissan recommended 7500 mile intervals.

im looking a buying my son a 2006-2007 Nissan Xterra or a Frontier. Ones I have looked at so far have the 4.0 engine. I am assuming this is the same 4.0 engine my 06 Path has.

Will they have the same trans/radiator potential issues? or is it an entirely different setup?

Thanks

They have the same issues, as do the Frontiers with the 4.0L of that same era. They also share the timing chain issues, as well.

Based on this thread, I changed my oil this weekend to Mobil1 full synthetic and lucas synthetic additive. Wow, that oil filter was on tight; I couldn't get the filter wrench in there very well.
What interval are most of you using in changing your synthetic oil? I saw 7500, 5000, and 3000. I think I'll go with 5k.

When you go to the oil change place they supposedly lube other things as well. How and what do they lube? I'd like to learn to do this stuff myself, just because its fun.

I'm not aware of any lube points on the PF. As for the mileage, the owners manual says you can go 7,500 on conventional oil so that's what I did during the warranty period (using synthetic) just to be conservative. Now that I'm out of warranty I'm going 10k. Oil analysis shows that's still conservative on these.

My 2001 Mitsu Eclipse has been on Mobil 1 5w30 since it's first oil change at 1500 miles. But I only put on less than 6,000 miles a year on it. So I do change the oil every 3,000 miles. Which is about once, or maybe twice a year  It currently has 66,000 miles on it.

I still have one more "free" oil change at the Nissan dealership that I bought my Pathy from. Maybe after that, I will switch to Mobil 1. After 7 months of owning, I've put on a little over 5,000 miles on it. I only drive it on the weekends.

Took this pic when I brought it back to the dealership for it's first oil change back in August. The service manager told me that I should be changing my oil at 5,000 miles intervals
