No practical purpose.
They are in vogue now as a fashion accessory. They've been on BMW M Cars for years (and have appeared periodically on domestics before that), but as of this year are on everything from Escalades to entry level Fords. I think they will go out of fashion as quickly as they came in, and then you will be stuck with a wart on your PF.

Just my .02.

However, they do serve a purpose on the new Ford F250/350/450 as they do add fresh air into the engine compartment. I have a buddy who works for Ford's design department. He says currently the Ford trucks are the only vehicles that use the side vent for anything truly practical.

Might be something there if one was considering additional front grill blocking.

i think it was just shown that the wing did prevent dust accumulation during our recent DVNP trip.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of these either although I just passed a fullsized Mack truck that had about a square foot of these on the side.

If there was some way that I could block all of my front grill openings and have the air pulled in at the underside and dumped out fender side vents it would probably improve how the truck slipped through the air and by that give some fuel economy improvement.

Haha, wannabe for me is the guys that still have the roof racks on, but will never use them, but leave them on for 'style'.

Another possibility to keep the engine compartment cooler would be some hood vents. here is a link to a supplier:

Anyone have experience with this sort of a program?

May get rust problems later if not installed correctly.

I really like these fake stick on side vents. They make all cars look cool.
