Hub Assembly replacement

Postby martyf250 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:03 am

I have a slight vibration coming from front right and was told by tire shop my front right wheel bearings are shot. I picked up the hub assembly at local dealer.

What size nut is used on the rotor and is it reverse thread (left tight, right loose?)

any other tricks someone can recommend to make this easier than it "should be"?

IIRC its a 32mm. Have a 34mm on hand just in case my memory is bad.

Remove the 4 bolts on the rear of the hub. If I recall they were 14mm, and there are 4 of them. Once they are removed, I used an air chisel to knock the hub assembly loose from the hub, as it is wedged on there, and there is also some residual corrosion that makes it difficult to break free.

Per my earlier post on this subject, the hardest part of this job is getting the damned Deutsch connector disconnected for the ABS sensor. Once they are dirty, they are really hard to work with.

When putting on the new hub assembly, ensure that you've wire brushed the mounting surface, and use the 4 bolts to ensure it goes down evenly on the mounting surface by torquing them down a little bit at a time in a cross-pattern.

Looking back on your posts, you've been thinking about doing this for a while. Where did you end up buying parts? How much?

Let us know how it goes, and if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the input. I am a big procrastinator and ever since I've hit 65000mi it has been 1 thing after another that needs attention (new brakes, U joint, E brake. i like to do my own work if i can. I picked up the hub at dealer for $159 ($170 with tax). I am waiting to hear back on the vent control valve i need and the parts guy was checking on it for me. I've tried to clean it out multiple times but will set the SES light on and off P0455

Being a procrastinator isn't always bad. I have a tendency to do things way sooner than they need to be done. My father-in-law is the exact opposite, I don't think he ever did the plugs on his 1989 Toyota Van. And it ran just fine for over 300000kms.

There were a couple of TSB's on the P0455 code. One for a filter kit and the other for an updated vent control valve.

Do you know if the axle nut is a normal or reverse thread?

They are not reverse-threaded. Good ol' "righty-tightly, lefty-loosy!"

So i have a new hub assembly from the dealer. My brother who has an 08 wrangler just replaced his ball joints and needed to take his wheel bearing hubs off. On one side broke off 2 of the three bolts that hold it on. I am petrified my car being older that this will happen to me....any ideas to take these RI winter rusted bolts out without breaking them off!

I soaked mine in some ZEP 45 before doing them. Also, I used impact tools.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. A lot of things break on Jeeps when you try to take them apart!

PB Blaster and a torch are your friend. (I also own a 92 Jeep with lots of stubborn bolts :x ) Don't forget the anti-seize when you put the bolts back it. Should you have a bolt that breaks, it should be easy to extract it since you can access it from both sides. I just replaced a front hub on my 05 pathfinder two weeks ago and didn't have any problems. Good luck!

Did both my fronts at ~100k, 4 bolts on the back of the assembly, you will need an impact wrench (32mm pretty sure) and a pry bar + small sledge/hammer to pop the assembly out. I found the smallest punch I had and gave it a tap every inch or so around where the 2 pieces join. I don't know if it was psychological or not but i used the trick a while back when I was having some trouble replacing some lugs for a trailer (built off the front end of a 50's era chevy truck). A buddy of mine suggested using the small punch and giving it a few whacks with a ball peen; the theory being the high pitched frequency of the vibration would help break up bonding. It helped me out of the lug situation and got me out of a squeeze when someone decided to mow a rock with a riding mower a few years back.
+ 1 of the PB !
+1 on the ABS sensor connector as well!
